Stainless Steel Wire Rod
Our offering also includes stainless steel wire rod, a product we import under individual customer orders. We offer wire rod in martensitic, ferritic, austenitic, duplex types, and in heat-resistant steel grades. These products are used for wire drawing, drawing stainless steel rods, making cutlery, cold heading, and manufacturing screws, springs, and profiles. Stainless steel wire rod is utilized in the medical, aviation, nuclear, and refinery industries. Stainlesseurope.com is capable of providing stainless steel wire rod that meets ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards.
Is Stainless Steel Wire Rod a Soft Product?
These products can be ordered in various grades of stainless or acid-resistant steel. Among corrosion-resistant steels, ferritic and austenitic grades are known for their low hardness. The primary factor determining the hardness of the wire rod is the level of alloying elements; if it is low, the products will be in a soft state. Additionally, if there is a relatively small amount of carbon in the chemical composition, the stainless steel wire rod will have low hardness. Austenitic steel products, compared to ferritic ones, have a greater tendency to strengthen through cold working. Considering this, austenitic steels are harder than ferritic steel products.
Below we present a summary of stainless steel grades characterized by a very low level of hardness:

When assessing the hardness of steel products, one should also consider the form of the material product (sheet, pipe, rod), delivery condition, and thickness. Wire rod prepared by hot rolling will have a lower hardness compared to cold-rolled sheet of small thickness. It is generally acceptable that ferritic steel in grade 1.4512 exhibits a hardness level (140-180 HB = 78-89 HRB). Steel products in grade 1.4016 have hardness in the range (150-200 HB = 80-93 HRB). The austenitic grade 1.4301/1.4307 (160-210 HB = 84-95 HRB). In the last grade, we also have seamless tubes 1.4301 and round bars in grade 1.4301/304 in our warehouse. The material hardness is specified on quality certificates available for every product sold by our company.
Stainless Steel Wire Rod – as a Material Used in Swimming Pool Water
Stainless steel wire rod in grade 1.4305 contains sulfur at levels from 0.15 to 0.30%. This leads to the formation of manganese sulfide (MnS) in the steel structure, increasing the brittleness of chips during machining (more efficient and faster machinability). A disadvantageous feature of this grade after processing is that it can develop pitting corrosion at those spots. For this reason, wire rod in grade 1.4305 should not be used in environments where chlorides can degrade the passive layer of the corrosion-resistant material. Therefore, steel products in the mentioned grade should not be used in swimming pool water.
A better choice for pool environments would be wire rod in grades 1.4301/1.4307 or 1.4401/1.4404, which contain molybdenum (increasing corrosion resistance). In grade 1.4404, you can directly purchase from our warehouse neck flanges 1.4404 or seamless steel tubes 316. The proper choice of stainless steel for pool water depends on the chloride concentration and water temperature. Steel products in grade 1.4301 are suitable for use in water at low temperatures, with chlorine concentrations ranging from 1-3 ppm and in pools with clean water. Meanwhile, wire rod in grade 1.4404 can be used in pool halls where chlorine levels range between 3 and 5 ppm.
