Reducing tees

What are reducing tees?

Reducing tees are pipe fittings shaped like the letter "T" that join three pipe runs, with at least one outlet having a smaller diameter than the main run. They allow a pipe system to branch off to a different size while keeping flow control and structural integrity. Reducing tees are also called reducing T-pieces, reducing T fittings or branch reducing tees.

Materials and common grades

All products in this category are made from stainless steels. Typical materials you will encounter include:

  • Austenitic stainless steel – the most common type for reducing tees, offering excellent corrosion resistance and formability. Common grades are 304 (often referenced as EN 1.4301 / AISI 304) and 316 or 316L (EN 1.4401 / 1.4404, AISI 316 / 316L). 316/316L is preferred where greater resistance to chlorides or acidic media is required.
  • Heat‑resistant stainless steel – used where sustained high temperatures occur. Examples include grades from the 309/310 family (AISI designations), which are selected for elevated-temperature strength and oxidation resistance.
  • Ferritic and other specialist stainlesses – used for particular corrosion or magnetic requirements; selection depends on the service environment.

Note: grade selection depends on the application (corrosive media, temperature, mechanical loads). Product pages list the exact grade and specification for each item.

Where reducing tees are used

Reducing tees are versatile fittings used across a wide range of sectors and projects, from simple DIY repairs to heavy industry:

  • Domestic and commercial plumbing, heating and HVAC systems
  • Food and beverage processing and brewing (where hygienic stainless steel is required)
  • Pharmaceutical and laboratory installations
  • Chemical processing and water treatment
  • Marine and offshore systems where resistance to saltwater corrosion is important
  • Oil and gas, petrochemical piping
  • Automotive and manufacturing plant systems
  • Construction, building services and small workshop/garage projects

Types, connections and standards

Reducing tees are available in several connection types to suit installation methods:

  • Butt‑weld (BW) – ends prepared for full‑penetration welding, commonly used in process and high‑pressure systems.
  • Socket‑weld (SW) – used for small bore pipework where a fillet weld is acceptable.
  • Threaded – for easier assembly/disassembly in low‑pressure systems (NPT/BSP threads as specified on the product).

Fittings are manufactured to recognised industry standards (EN, ASTM/ASME or equivalent). Check each product page for the exact standard and pressure/temperature ratings.

How to choose the right reducing tee

When selecting a reducing tee, consider the following:

  • Material grade – pick 304 for general use and 316/316L for chloride or acidic environments; choose a heat‑resistant grade for high temperatures.
  • Size and configuration – confirm the run and branch diameters match your pipework; reducing tees are specified as run × run × branch.
  • Pressure rating and wall thickness – ensure the tee’s schedule or PN rating meets system requirements.
  • Connection type – choose butt‑weld, socket or threaded based on how you will join the pipes.
  • Standards and certification – for regulated industries (food, pharma, offshore) select fittings with the appropriate material certificates and manufacturer declarations.

Who we supply and custom options

We serve contractors, plant engineers, maintenance teams, fabricators, DIY enthusiasts and procurement teams across industries. If you need a non‑standard size or a specific grade, we offer customised reducing tees made to order-contact our technical sales team with your drawing or specification for advice and a quotation.

Summary: Our range of reducing tees provides reliable ways to connect pipes of different diameters using corrosion‑resistant and heat‑resistant stainless steels. Choose the correct grade, size and connection type for safe, long‑lasting installations.
