Round bars

Round bars - product overview

Round bars (also called round rods or stainless round bars) are solid, cylindrical metal bars used as raw material for machining, fabrication and structural applications. In our shop you will find round bars made only from stainless, heat‑resistant and acid‑resistant steels – materials selected for corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and suitability for welding or machining.

What are stainless steel round bars and how are they used?

Stainless steel round bars are straight bars with a circular cross‑section supplied in a range of diameters and lengths. They are commonly used as shafts, pins, fasteners, spacers, handrail posts, machine components and decorative elements. Because they resist corrosion and are easy to clean, they are particularly suitable for food processing, medical, pharmaceutical and marine environments. Heat‑resistant and acid‑resistant variants are used where high temperatures or aggressive chemicals are present.

Common grades and equivalents

We stock a variety of stainless and specialist grades. Below are commonly used EN numbers with widely accepted names or equivalents where applicable. Designation systems can vary (EN, AISI/UNS), so we list both where standard:

  • 1.4301 - stainless steel grade commonly known as 304 (AISI/UNS: 304 / S30400). Good general corrosion resistance and formability.
  • 1.4307 - low carbon variant 304L (better for welding and forming where carbide precipitation must be minimised).
  • 1.4305 - free‑machining austenitic grade (commonly called 303) for easier machining operations.
  • 1.4404 - low carbon 316L (marine grade; AISI/UNS: 316L / S31603), better resistance to chlorides and pitting.
  • 1.4541 - stabilised austenitic grade (commonly called 321), improved resistance to intergranular corrosion at elevated temperature.
  • 1.4571 - titanium‑stabilised 316 (often referenced as 316Ti), used in higher temperature applications.
  • 1.4462 - duplex stainless (often called 2205 duplex, UNS S32205), offering higher strength and improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

We also supply other EN grades used for martensitic, ferritic and heat‑resistant applications (listed by EN numbers in our product tables). If you need a specific AISI/UNS equivalent or detailed chemical/mechanical data, our product pages and technical sheets provide the exact specifications for each grade.

Sizes, finishes and services

Round bars are available in a wide range of diameters from small rods used for precision parts to larger bars for structural components. Typical options include turned, bright or mill finishes depending on the grade and intended use. We offer a cut‑to‑length service so you receive bars in the exact size you need, and we provide a range of delivery options across the UK. If you require machining, surface finishing or certification documents (material certificates), check the product page or contact our team.

Applications and industries

Round bars are used across many sectors. Typical applications and industries include:

  • Construction and architecture - handrails, balustrades, fixings and decorative elements.
  • Food and catering - processing equipment, tanks, fittings and utensils where hygiene is essential.
  • Pharmaceutical and chemical - components and piping resistant to acids and cleaning agents.
  • Marine and offshore - 316/duplex grades for seawater exposure and structural components.
  • Automotive and engineering - shafts, pins, fasteners and high‑stress parts.
  • Small workshops and DIY - hobby machining, repairs and bespoke fabrications.
  • Who buys round bars?

Our customers range from individual tradespeople and small fabricators to large engineering firms and contractors. Round bars suit anyone who needs reliable, corrosion‑resistant stock material for machining, welding, forming or structural use - including metalworkers, architects, plant engineers and maintenance teams.

Why choose stainless and specialist steels for round bars?

Stainless, heat‑resistant and acid‑resistant steels offer long service life in corrosive or high‑temperature environments, maintain strength under load and are compatible with hygiene and safety standards in regulated industries. Choosing the right grade (for example 304 for general use, 316L for marine/food, duplex 2205 for higher strength and chloride resistance) ensures a balance between cost, machinability and performance.

Need help selecting the right round bar?

If you are unsure which grade or size suits your project, our technical team can advise on material selection, machinability, welding considerations and suitable finishes. Check individual product pages for detailed chemical and mechanical data, certification options and available cut lengths.
