Ferritic steel – stainless without nickel

Ferritic stainless steels contain 11–18% chromium and no nickel, or only traces of it. They are magnetic, cannot be hardened and – important for large orders – their price does not depend on the nickel market. Compared with 304, they have lower thermal expansion and better thermal conductivity, so they distort less when heated, and they are practically immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking. The differences between steel families are explained in the article Ferritic, austenitic and martensitic stainless steel.

Composition in wt. % per EN 10088-2. Equivalents: 1.4016 = X6Cr17 = UNS S43000, 1.4509 = X2CrTiNb18 = UNS S43940.

Properties and applications

1.4016 (430) is the classic ferritic grade for indoor use: appliance housings, range hoods, food-service panels, store fixtures and decorative trim. It bends and draws well, but weldability is limited because of grain growth in the weld zone. 1.4509 (441) is stabilized with titanium and niobium, so it welds better and handles high temperatures well – it is used in exhaust systems, heat exchangers, hot water tanks, burners and manifolds.

Sizes and finishes

Sheets are 0.4 to 5 mm thick in 1000×2000, 1250×2500 and 1500×3000 mm formats. The 2B finish is smooth and matte, BA is bright and mirror-like, 1D is hot rolled and pickled, and brushed sheets come in 240, 320 or 400 grit. We can cut any sheet to size.

When to choose austenitic steel

Outdoors near the coast, in swimming pools and in contact with chlorides, 316L / 1.4404 sheet performs better, and for deep drawing or welding, 304 / 1.4301 sheet. For direct flame exposure above approx. 950 °C (1,740 °F), use heat-resistant sheet. Other grades are in the Sheets category.
