Duplex 1.4462 – two phases, twice the strength
1.4462 (X2CrNiMoN22-5-3, UNS S31803 / S32205, commonly called 2205) has a microstructure of roughly half austenite and half ferrite. As a result, its yield strength is about twice that of 316L, and its resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking is much better. High chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen give a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of approx. 35. How it is calculated is explained in the article PREN – pitting resistance of stainless steel.
Chemical composition of 1.4462
| Grade | C | Cr | Ni | Mo | N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4462 / 2205 | ≤ 0.030 | 21.0–23.0 | 4.5–6.5 | 2.5–3.5 | 0.10–0.22 |
| 1.4404 / 316L (for comparison) | ≤ 0.030 | 16.5–18.5 | 10.0–13.0 | 2.0–2.5 | ≤ 0.10 |
Values in wt. % per EN 10088. Equivalents: 1.4462 = X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 = UNS S31803 / S32205; fittings per ASTM A815 – WPS31803.
Sizes: inch series
We stock 28 long-radius (1.5D) 90° elbows in inch sizes: from 21.34 mm (½″, DN15) to 323.85 mm (12″, DN300). Walls follow schedule series, e.g. 2.77 mm for ½″ or 4.57 mm for 12″, so the elbows match ASTM duplex pipe. When joining to metric pipe, check the OD and wall – they must be identical. Center-to-face dimensions for every size are listed in the seamless elbow dimensions table.
Applications and welding
Duplex elbows serve in seawater and cooling water systems, on offshore platforms and ships, in desalination, in the pulp and chemical industries and in high-pressure lines, where the higher strength allows thinner walls. More on materials for marine service in the article stainless steel offshore. Duplex is welded with 2209 filler under controlled heat input to maintain the correct ferrite content. Because of embrittlement, the steel is not used for long-term service above approx. 250 °C (480 °F).
Duplex pipe and round bar
To go with the elbows, choose duplex 1.4462 pipe & tube and duplex 1.4462 / S31803 round bar. In less aggressive media, 316L / 1.4404 elbows will do. All grades are in the Seamless Elbows category.
