316L elbows for chloride-bearing media
1.4404 (AISI 316L), X2CrNiMo17-12-2, is an austenitic stainless steel with 2–2.5% molybdenum and low carbon. Molybdenum increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides, while low carbon prevents intergranular corrosion in the weld zone. 316L elbows are the standard in food and pharmaceutical plants, chemical processing, water and wastewater treatment, swimming pool systems and wherever piping is cleaned with chlorine-based agents. Some elbows are dual-certified 1.4401 / 1.4404 (316 / 316L).
Chemical composition of 1.4404 / 316L
| Grade | C | Cr | Ni | Mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4404 / 316L | ≤ 0.030 | 16.5–18.5 | 10.0–13.0 | 2.0–2.5 |
| 1.4401 / 316 | ≤ 0.07 | 16.5–18.5 | 10.0–13.0 | 2.0–2.5 |
Values in wt. % per EN 10088. Equivalents: 1.4404 = X2CrNiMo17-12-2 = AISI 316L = UNS S31603; fittings per ASTM A403 – WP316L.
Sizes and wall thicknesses
The category includes 84 long-radius (1.5D) 90° elbows for pipe from 21.3 to 323.9 mm OD (DN15–DN300). Walls range from 2 to 12.5 mm, in both metric and schedule sizes (e.g. 2.77, 3.91 and 5.49 mm), so the elbow can be matched to EN or ASME pipe. Elbow and pipe ends should have the same OD and wall for a full-penetration butt weld. Center-to-face dimensions for every size are listed in the seamless elbow dimensions table.
Welding and surface cleanliness
316L is TIG-welded with 316L filler and back purging on the inside. Heat tint and scale must be removed after welding by pickling or pickling paste and the surface passivated – otherwise even 316L can start to corrode at the weld. For seawater and concentrated chlorides at elevated temperatures, consider duplex.
Pipe, flanges and other grades
To go with the elbows, choose 316L / 1.4404 pipe & tube and 316L / 1.4404 flanges. For higher service temperatures, see 316Ti / 1.4571 elbows; for seawater, duplex 1.4462 elbows. All grades are in the Seamless Elbows category.
