What kind of steel is 1.4571?

1.4571 (AISI 316Ti), also designated X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2, is an austenitic molybdenum-bearing stainless steel stabilized with titanium. Like 316L, it owes its resistance to chlorides and acids to approx. 2–2.5% molybdenum. The difference lies in how it is protected against intergranular corrosion: instead of lowering the carbon content, titanium is added in an amount at least five times that of carbon. Titanium ties up the carbon as stable carbides, so chromium does not precipitate at the grain boundaries – neither during welding nor in long-term service at temperatures where unstabilized steels become sensitized. For many years it was the standard grade for chemical equipment in Poland and Germany, which is why the 1.4571 designation still appears frequently in technical documentation. How to read EN numbers, AISI grades and legacy designations is explained in the article Stainless steel designations: AISI, EN, DIN, GOST.

316Ti chemical composition and designations

GradeCCrNiMoTi

1.4404 / 316L (for comparison)≤ 0.03016.5–18.510.0–13.02.0–2.5–

Values in wt.% per EN 10088-1. Equivalent designations: 1.4571 = X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 = AISI 316Ti = UNS S31635; closest GOST equivalent: 10Kh17N13M2T. Our bar names use the format "1.4571 / 316Ti"; the heat chemistry is confirmed by a 3.1 certificate.

Ø 5–100 mm, stock lengths and cutting

We carry more than 800 bars in 1.4571 with diameters from Ø 5 to Ø 100 mm. Bars are sold in lengths such as 10 cm or 1 m, and other lengths are cut to order. The theoretical weight on the product page lets you compare the price of a piece with a per-kilogram price. Bar in this grade is usually supplied to EN 10088-3, and bar intended for pressure equipment to EN 10272; the standard and delivery condition of the heat are confirmed by an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. Diameter deviations for the individual tolerance classes are listed on the round bar tolerances page.

Machining and welding

Hard titanium carbides and nitrides act like fine abrasive particles in the material. 316Ti bar wears cutting edges faster than 316L, and a mirror-polished surface may show visible traces of inclusions – for decorative parts, a different grade is the better choice. In return, the steel tolerates welding of heavy sections and multi-pass welds without subsequent annealing.

Applications of 1.4571 round bar

1.4571 bar is machined into components for chemical and petrochemical equipment: agitator shafts in reactors, valve stems and plugs, studs and nuts for flanged joints operating at elevated temperatures. The grade is also used in the pulp and paper industry, in heat exchangers, in dye houses and electroplating shops, and in equipment whose documentation specifies 1.4571 or an older national equivalent. Switching to another grade in such a design – even a seemingly equivalent one – should be agreed with the design engineer.

316Ti, 316L or 321?

At ambient temperature the two molybdenum grades offer very similar corrosion resistance, and low-carbon 316L / 1.4404 stainless round bar is easier to machine and polish. 316Ti is chosen mainly for welded parts that spend a long time at elevated temperatures. Titanium also stabilizes 321 / 1.4541 stainless round bar, which contains no molybdenum and is intended for hot service rather than chloride exposure. For seawater and heavily loaded shafts, 1.4462 duplex round bar is the better option; where there are no chlorides, 304 / 1.4301 round bar will do, and in the flame zone and above approx. 800 °C you need heat-resistant round bar.
