What kind of steel is 1.4571?
AISI 316Ti (1.4571) is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel stabilized with titanium. The simplest way to describe it is 316 with added titanium: molybdenum provides resistance to chlorides and many acids, while titanium ties up carbon and protects the material against intergranular corrosion after welding and during service at elevated temperatures. Under Russian standards the grade is known as 10X17H13M2T. It is especially widespread in German-speaking countries and in older chemical plants, which is why 1.4571 is often sought for repairs and replacement of pipe sections.
Titanium instead of low carbon
There are two ways to keep the weld of an acid-resistant steel from losing its corrosion resistance: lower the carbon content (the 316L route) or tie the carbon up with titanium (the 316Ti route). For welding, the effect is similar, but 1.4571 has a higher yield strength at elevated temperatures and better tolerates long-term service in the range where an unstabilized steel could become sensitized. The trade-off is hard titanium carbonitrides in the microstructure – they make high-gloss polishing difficult, so 316L is more common where a smooth, sanitary surface is needed.
Chemical composition of 1.4571
| Grade | C | Cr | Ni | Mo | Ti |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4571 / 316Ti | ≤ 0.08 | 16.5–18.5 | 10.5–13.5 | 2.0–2.5 | 5×C – 0.70 |
Composition per EN 10088-1 (wt. %). Equivalents: 1.4571 = X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 = AISI 316Ti = UNS S31635 = GOST 10X17H13M2T.
Tube descriptions may read “1.4571 / 316Ti”, “1.4571 / TP316Ti” or just “1.4571”. It is the same material, described under European and American standards – the “TP” prefix is how ASTM tube and pipe specifications write the grade. The mill certifies compliance with several standards at once, and the grade and product standard of a given heat are documented in an EN 10204 3.1 certificate, issued on request.
316Ti pipe, tube and hollow bar sizes
We offer 316Ti tube with outside diameters from 6 to 325 mm (DN 6–300) and walls from 1 to 42 mm. A significant part of the range – more than 800 items – is heavy-wall 1.4571 hollow bar, used to make bearing bushings, seal rings and valve components. When selecting hollow bar for machining, OD and wall tolerances must be taken into account – our article Why a 14 mm bar won’t fit into an 18×2 mm tube illustrates this well. Typical product standards for 1.4571 tube are the European EN 10216-5 and ASTM A312 and A213. Any tube can be cut to length.
Where is 1.4571 pipe and tube used?
316Ti stainless tube goes into chemical and petrochemical equipment, heat exchangers, evaporators and process piping handling organic acids and salt solutions at elevated temperatures, pulp and paper mills and sugar plants, flue gas and wastewater treatment systems, and pressure equipment. Its pitting resistance in chlorides is on par with 316L, since both grades have similar chromium and molybdenum contents.
316Ti or 316L – and when to choose another grade
For typical welded systems running at ambient temperature, and in the food and pharmaceutical industries, low-carbon steel is usually enough – see 316L / 1.4404 seamless tube. If the environment is free of chlorides and acids but titanium stabilization is needed for hot service, 1.4541 / 321 tube is a simpler choice, and with no temperature requirements, 304 / 1.4301 stainless tube will do. At high chloride concentrations and high stresses, duplex and super duplex tube offers better resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking, while for service in hot gases, where oxidation resistance counts, there is heat-resistant tube.
