Stainless steel sheets are flat metal plates made from stainless, acid-resistant or heat-resistant steel. - EN 1.4016 / AISI 430 - a ferritic (magnetic) stainless steel, economical and useful where corrosion exposure is limited and magnetism is acceptable.
- Duplex 2205 (EN 1.4462 / UNS S31803/S32205) - higher strength and excellent resistance to stress‑corrosion cracking and localised corrosion; frequently used offshore and in aggressive chemical environments.
- Austenitic heat‑resistant grades (e.g. AISI 310 / 309) - selected when the sheet must withstand elevated temperatures better than standard grades.
Finishes and forms
Surface finish and form influence appearance, corrosion performance and fabrication. Common choices include:
- 2B (cold‑rolled) - a smooth, semi‑bright industrial finish used widely for food and process equipment.
- BA (bright annealed) - a shinier, reflective finish produced in a controlled anneal atmosphere.
- Brushed / satin - a matt, linear finish often used architecturally and for appliances.
- Mirror / No.8 - highly reflective finish for decorative applications.
- Forms - full sheets and cut‑to‑size or trimmed panels; perforated and patterned sheets are also commonly available for specific uses.

When selecting a sheet consider four main factors: the environment (corrosive agents such as chlorides), mechanical requirements (strength and thickness), formability/weldability and the required surface finish. In simple terms:
- Choose 316L (AISI 316L / EN 1.4404) for exposure to salts, coastal locations or more aggressive chemicals.
- Choose 304 (AISI 304 / EN 1.4301) for general‑purpose indoor and many outdoor uses where chlorides are not present.
- Choose ferritic grades such as 430 where magnetism and lower cost matter and corrosion exposure is moderate.
- Choose duplex 2205 for higher strength and resistance to localised corrosion in demanding industrial or offshore environments.
Also check if you need a particular finish (e.g. brushed for aesthetics, 2B for process equipment) and whether the sheet will be formed or welded - low‑carbon grades such as 316L are preferred where heavy welding is planned.
Care and cleaning
Caring for stainless steel sheets is straightforward but doing it properly preserves appearance and performance. Key points:
- Regular cleaning with mild detergent and warm water removes dirt and surface contaminants.
- Avoid abrasive pads that can scratch the finish; always clean with the grain on brushed finishes.
- For light staining, household remedies such as white vinegar, baking soda or citric acid can be effective - rinse thoroughly and dry.
- Avoid prolonged contact with strong chlorinated bleaches or hydrochloric acid, as high concentrations of chlorides can cause pitting in some grades.
- After exposure to salt water or coastal spray, rinse with fresh water and dry to reduce risk of surface staining.
