Duplex 1.4462 – two phases, higher strength

1.4462 (X2CrNiMoN22-5-3) is the most widely used duplex stainless steel, better known as 2205. Its microstructure is roughly half ferrite and half austenite. That combination gives a yield strength about twice that of 304 and 316L (at least 450 MPa for bar per EN 10088-3) and very good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Around 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum and a nitrogen addition put its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) at about 35. Because of its ferrite content, duplex bar is magnetic.

What does "duplex 1.4462 / UNS S31803" mean in product names?

Our bar names carry both the European designation 1.4462 and the US designation UNS S31803. ASTM standards list two numbers for this steel: S31803 and the newer S32205, which raises the minimum chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen contents. Most mills now produce bar dual-certified to S31803 / S32205 that also meets the requirements of EN grade 1.4462. The actual chemistry and product standard of each heat are confirmed by an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate.

Sizes, cutting and machining

We carry more than 600 duplex bars with diameters from Ø 10 to Ø 135 mm, in standard lengths such as 10 cm or 1 m, or cut to length. Each product page lists the theoretical weight, so you can convert the price of a piece into a price per kilogram. 1.4462 bar is typically made to EN 10088-3, EN 10272 or ASTM A276 / A479 – the certificate confirms which. Higher strength makes it tougher to machine: compared with 316L, use lower cutting speeds and more rigid workholding, and control heat input when welding to keep the right phase balance. Diameter tolerances are listed on our round bar tolerances page.

Applications of duplex round bar

Duplex bar is the material of choice for pump and agitator shafts running in seawater, brine and wastewater, for valve stems, and for bolts, studs and nuts in flanged joints on desalination plants and offshore platforms – learn more in Duplex 2205 (1.4462) in marine and offshore service. It is also used in the pulp and paper industry, in chemical storage tanks and in hydraulic structures, for axles and pins in locks and weirs. Where parts are under constant stress in warm chlorides, duplex reduces the risk of stress corrosion cracking.

Duplex or 316L?

Compared with 316L / 1.4404 round bar, duplex offers better resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking, and its higher strength lets you reduce the diameter of a shaft or pin. It does have limits: it is normally not used above about 250 °C, where the ferrite becomes brittle, and 316L performs better at very low temperatures. In chloride-free environments, 304 / 1.4301 stainless round bar will do, and when a part must be hard and wear-resistant, consider martensitic round bar such as 1.4057 / 431, at the expense of corrosion resistance.
