304 elbows – the workhorse grade for stainless piping
1.4301 (AISI 304) is the most popular austenitic stainless steel: about 18% chromium and 8–10% nickel, with no molybdenum. Elbows in this category are dual-certified 1.4301 / 1.4307 (304 / 304L), and the low carbon of the L version protects welds against intergranular corrosion. 304 elbows are used in potable and process water lines, compressed air and industrial gas systems, the food, brewing and dairy industries, ventilation, and in structures where appearance and easy cleaning matter.
Chemical composition of 1.4301 / 1.4307
| Grade | C | Cr | Ni |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4301 / 304 | ≤ 0.07 | 17.5–19.5 | 8.0–10.5 |
| 1.4307 / 304L | ≤ 0.030 | 17.5–19.5 | 8.0–10.5 |
Values in wt. % per EN 10088. Equivalents: 1.4301 = X5CrNi18-10 = UNS S30400, 1.4307 = X2CrNi18-9 = UNS S30403; fittings per ASTM A403 – WP304 / WP304L.
Sizes: DN15 to DN300
We carry 85 sizes of 90° elbows, almost all long radius (1.5D), for pipe from 21.3 to 323.9 mm OD. Walls come in two series: metric (e.g. 2.0, 2.6 and 3.2 mm) and inch schedule, e.g. 2.77 mm (Sch 40S for ½″) or 3.05 mm. Match each elbow to pipe with the same OD and wall so the butt-weld ends line up. Center-to-face dimensions for every size are listed in the seamless elbow dimensions table.
Limitations of 304
304 contains no molybdenum, so it can pit in seawater, brines, swimming pools and when cleaned with chlorine-based agents. Such systems call for 316L. For steam and elevated temperatures, titanium-stabilized 321 is the better choice. 304 elbows are TIG-welded with 308L filler, and heat tint should be removed by pickling after welding.
304 pipe and flanges
In the same grade we offer 304 / 1.4301 pipe & tube and 304 / 1.4301 flanges. For chloride-bearing media, choose 316L / 1.4404 elbows. All elbow grades are in the Seamless Elbows category.
